Fire Damages Several Greenhouses in Derry Township

DERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- It took firefighters from all over the area about a half hour to put out a fire that burned three greenhouses and a small building early Thursday morning in Westmoreland County.

The fire started around midnight, at Orazio's Greenhouse, along Pittsburgh Street in Derry Township. Orazio's owns five greenhouses on the property.

Derry Township Fire Chief Mark Piantine is pretty sure they know the cause.

"The owner's son says that the boiler, they have plants growing in the greenhouse right now, which keeps the plants warm. The boiler exploded, that's what caught the building on fire," Piantine said.

The owner's son told officials the explosion ignited Miracle Grow fertilizer.

The fire spread to two other greenhouses as well as another building on the property.

Nobody was hurt in the fire.

Fire crews did have some issues with getting water to the scene.

"There are no hydrants out here, so we had to bring tankers in," said Chief Piantine. "We put down nearly 2,000 feet of hose on the road, too."

It took crews about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Orazio's is a local greenhouse that sells soil, flowers and vegetable plants to people who live in the Derry Township area. Now, the family will have to figure out what to do next.

Firefighters didn't need to call a fire marshal once things got under control.

"We're just going to rule it as a boiler catching on fire which caused the fire here," Piantine said.
No one was injured in the fire.
