Pirates Star Andrew McCutchen's Secret Revealed, Cuts Hair

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – For Pirates' fans, the morning started off with superstar centerfielder Andrew McCutchen saying on social media that he had a secret. After much speculation and wondering, Cutch revealed that he has cut his hair.

McCutchen's trademark hair was flying in Tuesday's Spring Training game and on full display in the clubhouse. Suddenly, one day later, Cutch declared it was time for a change.

McCutchen posted the video on YouTube Wednesday afternoon.

In the video he says, "It's time to cut the locks, no big reason really, it's time for new change, and at the same time helping a real good cause."

After briefly contemplating keeping a rat tail, the final cut was made.

"I'm free," said McCutchen.

Not surprisingly, Cutch lightened up his head load for Pirates Charities.

"Well, all's well that ends well; new beginnings," he said.

Mark Melancon has been known for some pretty big off-season surprises of his own in the past. But this off-season, he took his glove and ventured to the land of the rising sun with wife Mary Catherine.

"I loved it, and each time you go, you get a little more used to their culture and traditions that they have," said Melancon. "And I really respect those guys and what they go through and their traditions."

After a summer of endless travel, you'd think guys like Neil Walker might want to park the suitcase in the off-season.

"Went to Mexico for a wedding up in the mountains," said Walker. "Nothing to unusual, we keep it pretty calm and pretty boring. I catch a lot Penguins games and things like that.

KDKA's John Shumway has more from Bradenton:

But not all off-season excitement is fun. Pirates starter Charlie Morton started the off-season on crutches, which is where he was when his daughter Gracie was born.

"That was a challenge at home," he said.

Tony Watson and his wife, Cassie, also welcomed a new baby girl this off-season.

"I'm just smiling thinking about what she's doing now at home," said Watson. "I'm sure mom's playing pick-a-boo with her and she's giggling. She's in a stage where she's recognizing our voices and our faces, so it's been a lot of fun the last couple weeks."
