Crews Investigating Cause Of Fayette Co. Recycling Plant Fire

BULLSKIN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – A recycling plant fire in Fayette County kept firefighters busy for hours early Sunday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the fire broke out at the B&R Recycling plant on Bellview Road in Bullskin Township. The fire started around 3 a.m. and it took crews about four hours to extinguish the flames.

When Bullskin Township firefighters arrived at the scene, the office building was engulfed in flames.

Chief Joe Liska said they were forced to stay on the outside.

"There was no getting guys in it. We were afraid the roof would cave in. Whatever he had in it, storage tanks, stuff like that," Chief Liska said.

Chief Liska said his men and firefighters from neighboring communities did a good job preventing the fire from spreading to a nearby storage warehouse.

The business is one of the largest recycling facilities in the area and is also a scrap yard.

"Once you got the water spraying and that, you couldn't even stand up in places. But, everybody worked together and we managed to get it knocked down, get it out before it spread any farther," Chief Liska said.

Four years ago the same business was hit by a devastating fire that kept firefighters busy for hours.

It appears this fire may have taken a heavier toll on the business.

"That's right where the scale house was and everything his wife was hoping she could save - records on the computer - but between the fire and smoke, there was no saving [anything], even on the hard drive," Chief Liska said.

The cause is unknown and is still being investigated by the county fire marshal.
