Vance Worley On Move To Bucs' Bullpen: 'Just Here To Help The Team'

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)- Last year, Vance Worley started some meaningful games down the stretch. Now, Worley will start the year in the bullpen.

"It's nothing I haven't heard before," Worley said after being informed of the decision on Monday. Jeff Locke was named the fourth starter in the rotation.

"That's how it's been from the get-go. They said it was going to be a competition to both me and Jeff, doesn't matter, just here to help the team. Whether one of us is starting or in the bullpen, we're all here for the same thing, and that is to win."

The Pirates won all of Worley's last five starts of 2014, including a Sept. 21 gem, when Worley threw eight innings of shutout baseball in a 1-0 win against Milwaukee.

"I know I will get opportunities to start again," Worley said. "Whenever that is, I have to take advantage of it, do the best I can with that. Otherwise, do the best I can in the bullpen."

Worley said it will be an adjustment, especially making sure he gets loose a lot faster, and is not sure how the Pirates will keep him stretched out if he's needed to start in the future.

"I got some text messages from some buddies back home and they just said, 'Do what you have to do. You know how to get back,'" Worley said.  "I was out of Major League Baseball to start last year and found my way back. It's all about opportunities, right time-right place."
