"Deer Doctor" Being Brought In To Help With Mt. Lebanon Deer Problem

MT. LEBANON (KDKA) – After a controversial deer hunting program earlier this year, Mt. Lebanon is trying a new approach to combat deer.

With last month's trap and cull program a bust, Mt. Lebanon Commissioner Kelly Fraasch says it's time to get some coexisting advice from the "Deer Doctor" on deer habits and needs.

"And then go over deer resistant planning for gardeners from someone who dabbles to a master gardener," said Fraasch.

Not to steal the doctor's thunder, but the Game Commission's Gary Fujak says homeowners can be proactive now, like commercial repellents.

"You could use those small bars of soap you get at hotels, motels, keep paper on them, drill a hole in them and hang them in the bushes or shrubs that the deer are eating," said Fujak.

Fujak says sometimes those things work and sometimes Bambi's not impressed.

But commissioners haven't given up on reducing the deer population.

The controversial deer culling program ended on March 20.

Only six deer were killed even though the operation was approved to euthanize 150 animals.

The program was several weeks behind schedule when it started, and officials blamed protesters, and warm weather for the failure.
