5K For Peace Preceded By Homewood Shooting
HOMEWOOD (KDKA) – With a bright sun shining over, Homewood residents took to the street in force, with members of Pittsburgh's Police force.
"It's really exciting to watch everyone come together as one," said Sabrina Vennie.
"We had 22 officers from Zone 5 come out here today," said Zone 5 Cmdr. Jason Lando.
These images made up the 2nd annual Homewood 5K Walk/Run for Peace.
"We've been trying to be intentional in building relationships with the bureau and the community and we're glad the officers have come out, but we're also glad because it's a great community event," said organizer Rev. Rodney Lyde.
The ugly face of gun violence in Homewood showed itself yet again, around 2:45 p.m. Shots were fired along Susquehanna Street, the victim was discovered near Hamilton and Dallas.
"He was stumbling in the middle of the street and he had been shot at least three times," said Police Spokesperson Sonya Toler.
No one is under the illusion that a simple run will eliminate violence.
"We definitely have some work to do on both sides of the fence," said Lando.
However, organizers and police say they can't solve the problem without each other's help. Some cooperation is better than none.
