Slain Lawrenceville Man Remembered For His Community Activism At Vigil

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Family and friends held a candlelight vigil Thursday night to honor a Lawrenceville man who was deeply involved in his community.

On a busy street corner in Lawrenceville, family and friends stood hand-in-hand, remembering a man they loved so much.

"I miss him. I miss him very much," Victoria Gray-Tillman, the victim's mother, said. "You can't even imagine."

Andre Gray disappeared from his apartment in October. His body was discovered in the Ohio River in West Virginia earlier this month.

Hubert Wingate, 30, has now been charged in Gray's murder after a witness came forward.

At the prayer vigil Thursday, many came out to honor Gray. As a bisexual man, Gray worked closely with LGBT youth through Project Silk and was well-respected in the community.

"He was a mentor and we had hired him to reach out to some of his peers, who needed help, who may not know about Project Silk," said Nayck Feliz, Gray's friend.

"It means everything to us and it would mean everything to him to not forgot him and everything he stood for," added Jeanne Gray, the victim's aunt.

Gray's cousin, Anita Brown, said if only she had the chance, she would tell him this: "I just want to tell him that I love him and I'll always miss him. And that I'll never forget him."
