Thousands Of Athletes Hit The Streets For 2015 Pittsburgh Marathon

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Nearly 40,000 runners hit the streets of Pittsburgh for the half and full marathon events Sunday morning.

When the race started at 7 a.m. , conditions couldn't have been better with sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s.

Many of the communities welcomed runners with Pittsburgh-style encouragement.

Linda Miller and Paula Kubler were there to honor Paula's niece who always ran in the race, until she passed away.

"She already was registered for this marathon, but unfortunately she's passed away at 32," said Kubler. "Our daughters and family are running in her memory."

A local band also provided traveling music as runners were cheered on as they headed for the Birmingham Bridge.

The winner of the men's marathon was Stephen Njoroge with a time of 2:15:18.

Negash Abebe Duki was second (2:15:43), while Werkuhah Seyoum Aboye came in third (2:17:13).

The winner of the women's marathon was Clara Santucci, of Dilliner, with a time of 2:34:07.

It only took a little over an hour for Kimutai Cheruiyot to win the men's half marathon event.

On the women's side of things, Susan Jerotich won with a time of 1:13:24.

Carlos Moleda won the handcycle division with a time of 1:23:48.

As the race went on, temperatures began to climb, making it more difficult on the runners. EMS treated 80 patients at the marathon. 49 of those patients went to area hospitals, which included three spectators.

The most serious patient was a man in his 20s who collapsed about 100 yards short of the finish line.  Medics had to give him CPR after he went into cardiac arrest. The man was resuscitated and transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Check back throughout the day for updates on the winners and the rest of the festivities!
