Police Investigating After Man Found Dead In McKeesport

MCKEESPORT (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a man was found dead in the middle of a McKeesport street Tuesday morning.

Allegheny County Homicide investigators are looking into the bizarre case. The initial call to police indicated a pedestrian was struck outside UPMC McKeesport Hospital around 4 a.m.

KDKA's Bob Allen Reports:

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner says they were called to UPMC McKeesport Hospital for a possible hit-and-run right outside the hospital's parking garage on Evans Avenue.

County Police said the victim was found dead in the street. Authorities now identify him as 35-year-old Jeffrey Carter of Duquesne.

A neighbor reported hearing a gunshot. He says when he looked out the window, he saw a man lying in the street. No cars were in sight and he says he didn't hear anyone take off.

Then, he says two security guards arrived with a police officer who performed CPR on the victim.

After that, an ambulance picked him up and took him into the hospital.

Another woman who lives across the street from the hospital says she also heard a gunshot.

KDKA's Amy Wadas Reports:

But after further investigation, police are now saying that it appears that Carter's death was a suicide. After viewing video surveillance footage, McKeesport police believe Carter may have jumped from the sixth floor of the parking garage near the hospital.

Police say he was homeless and staying overnight in the garage. They also say his vision was not very good.

Meanwhile, the findings from an autopsy by the Alleghen County Medical Examiner revealed that Carter died from blunt force trauma to the head and trunk area.
