Man Arrested After Chase Through Etna, Crash In Strip District

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police arrested William Morton, 23, after he attempted to flee from police early Friday morning.

The criminal complaint says Etna Police spotted a silver Honda speeding down Route 28 south. They tried to pull the car over, but it kept going. The car continued onto the 31st Street Bridge ramp, ran the red light after getting off the exit, turned left onto the bridge, then right onto Penn Avenue.

The car traveled to 21st Street, pulled off to the right side of the road, struck a wooden structure, then hit the back of a parked Nissan Altima.

Morton got out of the passenger side of the car and took off. Police say he kept reaching for his waistband and then threw a gun on the ground.

Police eventually caught up to him in the alley between 20th and 21st streets. Turns out, his gun was loaded with 10 rounds and one in the chamber.

Police say they found drugs and guns on Morton during his arrest. He doesn't have a licence to carry a firearm in Pennsylvania.

The car was towed away from the scene.

Morton is in the Allegheny County Jail facing multiple charges including possession with intent to deliver, carrying a loaded weapon, carrying a firearm without a license and prohibited acts.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 21.
