Police Make Arrest In Motorized Scooter Theft

SHARPSBURG (KDKA) -- A man is now behind bars, accused of stealing a disabled woman's motorized scooter in Sharpsburg.

Police arrested 19-year-old Robert Gizler of Lawrenceville on Wednesday.

Investigators say Gizler used a universal remote to open a van and steal the scooter from outside the woman's home.

He was caught on surveillance video riding away.

"The video was huge and the public's response to the video, that was essential," said Sharpsburg Police Officer Brian Hoebel. "Without the public, without the video, we don't have an arrest.

The scooter was recovered on Tuesday in Lawrenceville.

"We were having a lot of problems with cars being scratched and eggs being thrown and Officer Rudsky said get cameras. So we got five of them, and boy did they work," Carolyn Krebs said.

Police say Gizler faces additional charges for things found in his possession, including controlled substances.

Regardless, Krebs is thrilled to get the scooter back and for a fast-acting police department.

"They took this. They jumped on it, and they ran with it, and it's only been a few days and they got the scooter back," she said.

Gizler is in the Allegheny County Jail.
