City Officials Pleased With Outcome Of Kenny Chesney Concert

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Despite an afternoon storm that left some tailgaters injured, city officials say they're happy with the way Kenny Chesney fans handled themselves before and during the concert.

Officials say this year went much smoother thanks to their pre-concert planning.

Chief of Operations for the City Guy Costa says he's pleased with the overall outcome.

"We really appreciate their behavior and the most important thing is we appreciate how they behaved before the show, after the show and how they helped clean up," said Costa.

Two years ago, tailgaters dumped tons of garbage on the parking lots. While some trash was left behind, the parking lots were in much better shape.

"We required every parking lot to have a significant number of port-o-Johns," said Costa. "I believe there was over 100 port-o-Johns in the North Shore area, we required every parking lot operator to have trash bins in their parking lot."

Multiple police agencies were also called into to help patrol tailgaters and concert-goers.

Police say 10 people were arrested during the festivities – mostly for charges like simple assault and public drunkenness, but there were a couple more serious charges such as aggravated assault against a police officer and domestic violence.

One officer was also injured in a scuffle while trying to arrest someone.

There were also eight citations handed out for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct, but they export more will be coming against scalpers and for public urination.

Meanwhile, paramedics answered 170 calls -- mostly alcohol related and non-life threatening.

Costa joined "The KDKA Morning News" to compare how things went on Saturday with the problems they had in 2013.

In all, 73 people were arrested in 2013 compared to the 10 on Saturday. Costa says the worst offense he saw was, "somebody threw a chair at a police officer."

Costa says he expects the crowd for this weekend's Taylor Swift concert to be younger and doesn't expect any problems, but the same restrictions from the Chesney concert will be in place.
