Dash Cam Video Captures Uber Driver's Near Head-On Collision With Distracted Driver

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A part-time driver for Uber says he was nearly hit by a woman driving in the wrong lane on West Liberty Avenue.

"Kev Man," the driver's professional name, says was driving towards the South Hills over the weekend when a woman, driving a car with Ohio license plates, headed into town crossed into his lane.

"My guess is because she traveled such a long distance, not being aware of what she was doing, she had to have been looking at the screen," he told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti. "I slowed my car down, she continued to come into a stop and then I put my horn on to alert her, which she did eventually come alert. She stopped, once she realized that she was in front of a car in the wrong lane, she reached over with her right hand, gave me a wave, I don't believe she put down her phone, and then just drove along her business."

The close encounter was captured on a camera mounted on the front windshield of Kev Man's vehicle.

The U.S. Department OF Transportation says there were more than 1.6 million vehicle accidents in the country in 2014 related to driver cell phone usage.

The same report estimates that 50,000 Americans were injured last year in cell phone-related accidents, and 600 fatalities.

"I actually make a joke that I almost die once a week, based on people not paying attention to what they are doing [when they are behind the wheel]," said Kev Man.

According to one report, you are six times more likely to have an accident while using a cell phone than driving under the influence of alcohol.
