Dachshund Unable To Walk After Being Attacked By Deer In Mt. Lebanon

MOUNT LEBANON (KDKA) -- A woman's dog is unable to walk after a deer attacked it.

It happened in Mount Lebanon where they've been debating what to do about the growing deer population.

Rosemary Colwes, 85, wants her 12-year-old Dachshund back from the vet.

She says a doe hopped her backyard fence and attacked the dog named Honey as she sat on the back deck.

Cowles was inside cooking and never heard a thing, but then noticed the dog was unable to stand and covered in blood.

"I saw the deer and as soon as she saw me, she turned around and jumped the fence," said Colwes.

The veterinarian told her the dog had been kicked and stomped on.

"She had quite gash," said Colwes. "I mean it wasn't a little cut. It was a big hole."

The dog has no broken bones, but still can't walk.

While this doesn't occur frequently, the Pennsylvania Game Commission says a deer attacking a dog is not uncommon this time of year.

Wildlife Conservation Officer Tom Fazi says it's the female deer that normally attack because they've just given birth to their fawns. In fact, Fazi says they've gotten a few calls about this recently.

He says the deer view the dogs like coyotes or some type of predator, and he advises that you may not want to leave your dog out to roam this time of year if you live in an area with a lot of deer.

Colwes says she never saw any fawns around, but points to the abundant deer population in Mount Lebanon that made headlines during a controversial effort to trim the herd.
