Woman, Kids Injured In Deck Collapse

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A woman and children were hurt when a deck collapsed in the city's Sheraden section Saturday afternoon.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. at a house in the 2900-block of Sacramento Street.

According to police, the deck pulled away from the home.

A neighbor says kids were playing on the deck - some of them were in a small pool – when the collapse happened. The deck reportedly fell about five to six feet.

"The mother came out and the deck collapsed, and all the kids were in the one corner, and all the kids were funneled back to her and they landed on top of her," said Jim Abramowicz, a neighbor.

When Abromowicz heard the collapse and the children's screams, he ran next door to help.

"When the deck collapsed, I was in my dining room and heard the big crash. [I came] out the back door and into the yard and (began) taking the kids off of her," Abromowicz said. "The mother took the brunt of everything with all the kids coming on top of her. Seeing people hurt like that; somebody had to go in and get them."

Police say a toddler was taken to Children's Hospital for treatment.

Two other children and an adult were taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

There's no word on their conditions, but police say all the injuries were minor.
