Homeless Man Returns Wallet Full Of Money To Mom Battling Cancer
STATE COLLEGE (KDKA) -- A homeless man in State College just did something that is the epitome of a good deed.
He found a purse with nearly $400 in it, but instead of keeping the money, he decided to find the owner and return it, and he was shocked when he did.
"I was waiting to go to an AA meeting over across at St. Andrews, saw dollars on the bench when I walked over," said the man who found the purse sitting on a park bench.
The man, who is not identified, is originally from Boston and has been living on the streets for several weeks. But that didn't stop him from making the right choice.
He opened up the wallet, saw the cash - along with an access card - and knew the rightful owner was also down on their luck.
But he admits there was a split second where he thought it would just be easier to keep the cash for himself.
"Of course, of course," he said. "I just thought it wouldn't be any good on my conscience. Somebody might not have known, but I would have known. God would have known."
He contacted a local homeless shelter, and they tracked down the woman. And, it turns out; she's a single mother fighting brain cancer.
"That broke me down a little bit, it broke me down a little bit," the man said.
The pair didn't want their meeting recorded, but say it was filled with thank yous, hugs and smiles.
The woman says her whole life is inside that little bag, and she couldn't put into words how grateful she was to have it back.
"I'm trying to be honorable to God. I've lived a life taking a lot," the man said.
