Stormy Weather Causes Flash Flooding, Damage Across Area
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Stormy, unsettled weather passed through just about every part of the area Tuesday, leaving behind damage and causing flash flooding.
The line of storms started in the morning and left their mark, mostly, in counties north of the city.
Soil that's already saturated and water logged couldn't handle the heavy rains that fell. The National Weather Service says more than two inches of rain fell in Lawrence County. Click here for all the latest weather alerts.
In Shenango Township, this was supposed to be Jim Miller's wedding day.
Instead, Miller found himself wading through knee-deep water outside his trailer home in the Kerr Mobile Home Park. He was retrieving a few things from the trailer.
Miller told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "Everybody got out safe, nobody got hurt, so we can thank God for that."
The would-be bride, Maggie Magusiak, said, "I left [the trailer] to get ready for the wedding, and [water was everywhere] when I came back."
Magusiak says her children and grandchildren were in the trailer.
"I couldn't get to them, that's when the fire department performed a rescue," she said.
There was also creek flooding downstream.
Michelle Hietsch said her basement was flooded again, describing it as "absolutely horrid."
She explained that the flooding has happened numerous times before. She thinks either FEMA or the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers should work on a permanent fix for the flooding problems.
A neighbor, Ralph Maxwell, saw creek waters flood more than half his front yard.
As for the couple who missed out on their wedding, Magusiak says no new wedding date has been set yet.
Meanwhile, in New Castle, water spilled into the streets.
In some parts of downtown New Castle, the high waters didn't stop drivers. But in other parts of town, the barricades went up. A section of Moravia Street and South Mill Street were closed until the water receded.
For some drivers, though, those barricades came too late. They had already taken their chances, trying to drive through the high waters and lost the battle.

Flash flooding led to fish being washed out of a pond and creek. Some people tried throwing them back into Muddy Creek, hoping they would swim to Slippery Rock Creek.

The road definitely lived up to its name as dozens of carp were seen swimming across the road.
But it wasn't just heavy rains that caused problems.
High winds also brought down trees and power lines.
The storm toppled a massive tree on Old Pittsburgh Road, also in Shenango Township. And lightning lit up the skies in Beaver County.
The Beaver County Jail had to rely on generator power because bad weather knocked out electricity.
The storms also knocked out power to CCAC's Boyce campus on the North Side of Pittsburgh, cancelling classes for the day.
