Pirates' Harrison Gets Back To Basics At His Baseball Camp For Kids

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you know the Pirates, then you know Josh Harrison. The fan favorite spent the day teaching the younger generation about the game he loves.

Around 300 to 400 kids, grades one through eight, participated in Josh Harrison's youth camp on Wednesday. The turnout surprised even Harrison.

"I've done camps, and I don't think I've had more than 100, 150. This is basically double that size. Especially for it to be so early in the morning, and for them to have that type of energy. It definitely gave me some energy to be here," the Pirates' third baseman said.

The camp was held at North Allegheny Middle School where campers were divided into age groups.

From there they traveled from station to station learning the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, throwing and running the bases.

Harrison says it's important to focus on the basics.

"Just as you're teaching a 6 or a 7-year-old, you find yourself saying, 'You know what... I need to apply that to myself when I'm on the field.' You know, we have so much information, and we're older and we think we can do this, and do that, but when you tell a kid, 'Hey, just be ready to hit,' sometimes it makes you think I need to be ready to hit as opposed to going up there and thinking, let me try this, let me try that," said Harrison.

Also exciting for the kids is the perks that come with the camp.

They receive a camp team photo, a camp tee-shirt, and an autograph from Josh Harrison.
