Big Heart Pet Brands Closing Pittsburgh Site, 225 Employees Affected

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The company that makes Milk-Bone dog biscuits, 9Lives cat food and other pet treats is closing its Pittsburgh operation and consolidating it with its Ohio headquarters, affecting 225 workers.

Big Heart Pet Brands was purchased earlier this year by J.M. Smucker Co., the fruit preserves company which also owns Folgers coffee, Jif peanut butter, Pillsbury and other brands.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Smucker spokeswoman Maribeth Burns says Smucker plans to consolidate the work done in Pittsburgh at its headquarters in Orrville, Ohio.

That will happen by April 2016.

The Pittsburgh operation employs 225 workers, more than 100 of whom may be able to relocate as part of the move.
