Car Involved In Chase Slams Into East Liberty Restaurant

EAST LIBERTY (KDKA) -Police have taken several people into custody after a car slammed into a local restaurant early Thursday morning.

It happened around 3 a.m. at Capri Pizzeria and Bar at the intersection of Penn and North Highland Avenues in East Liberty.

Despite the damage the owner said today will be business as usual.

"Oh, it's unbelievable, seeing a car sitting inside there," said Capri owner Kevin. "This is our livelihood, this is what we rely on to take care of our family."

Pittsburgh police say the crash happened after a short, four-minute police chase. Police say five juveniles were inside the small sedan when the 15-year-old driver ran a red light and refused to stop for an officer.

The driver didn't make a proper left turn, and crashed into the front of the restaurant at the intersection of Penn and Highland Avenues. A small handgun was found inside the car.

"Shocked, trying to wrap your mind around this incident, tragedy for us," said Kevin as he looked around the business. He's been at this location for five years.

Creighton Rabs lives in the nearby Garfield neighborhood. He heard the sirens, and walked down the street to see what happened.

"When you're waking up at 3 a.m., and you're hearing all the activity in what should be a quiet neighborhood," says Rabs, "it kind of jars you a little."

The 15-year-old driver was arrested. The other four juveniles were released to the custody of their parents.

For the owners, the first order of business was cleaning up and making plans to re-open.

"We have to get the place back open as quick as possible," Kevin said.

Police say the 15-year-old driver faces several charges including receiving stolen property, and charges related to the gun that was found in the car.

Kevin estimated the damage around $50,000.
