Hot Dog Explorer Says PNC Park Has One Of MLB's Top Dogs
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Tom Lohr is a writer and blogger who loves hot dogs so much, he has traveled the country, stopping at all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums to find the best one.
Lohr went to 35 Minor League parks last year, eating and rating which stadiums have the best dogs.
Lohr joined "The KDKA Morning News" to talk about last year's trip and why he was at PNC Park again on Wednesday.
Last year, Lohr ranked each team's regular hot dog. He said PNC was tied for third on his list.
"PNC Park is hands down my favorite ballpark. I've talked to a lot of people that go to a lot of ballparks and about 80 percent of them say the same thing," Lohr said.
According to Lohr, the top dogs in MLB last year are as follows:
First - Baltimore
Tied for Second:
Atlanta
Cincinnati
Colorado
Tied For Third:
Pittsburgh
Arizona
Fourth - Chicago White Sox
Tied For Fifth
Washington
Philadelphia
This year, Lohr is ranking each team's specialty hot dog.
Lohr says while in Pittsburgh he tried the "The Cuban Dog," which is a 100 percent all-beef, foot-long hot dog topped with chopped ham, pulled pork, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles, all on a pretzel hoagie roll.
"Overall, I thought it was very delicious," Lohr said.
What is the strangest hot dog Lohr has ever had?
"The Churro Dog at the Arizona Diamondbacks. It's not really a meat dog, it's a dessert dog," Lohr said.
The Churro Dog is a cinnamon churro in a Long John chocolate-glazed doughnut, and then topped with ice cream, and caramel and chocolate sauces. He also added that some minor league teams have been putting peanut butter and jelly on hot dogs too.
PNC Park was Lohr's 17th Major League ballpark so far this summer.
