Tornado Touches Down In Cranberry During Quick-Moving Storm

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A quick-moving storm cell led to a tornado touching down in Butler County and leaving behind a trail of damage.

The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF0 tornado touched down in Cranberry Township near Chaparral Dr. and tracked North for about 1.5 mile.

Winds were estimated to reach 60-70 mph.

"First it was just the clouds, up in the sky swirling," said Sara Milford. "And then it just started to come down and garbage was going everywhere, tree branches, got really, really windy."

Butler County 911 said they had no reports of injuries, however the high winds uprooted trees in several Cranberry neighborhoods. The fact the ground was already soggy from recent heavy rains didn't help matters.

"It didn't sound all that windy," said Greg Flinn whose home was damaged. "It was, you know, loud, but not horribly loud. The rain was louder than the wind."

Carrie Kuhs says a huge pine tree landed on her house which her husband was getting ready to put up for sale in the next week or so. Kuhs told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti "nobody was hurt, thank God for that."

Larry Chappell was on his backyard deck with his family when he saw the rotating winds tossing things about. Chappell told everyone to get in the basement, until the storms passed.

Sara Milford, who was working in a Cranberry shoe store, said everyone's cell phones went off with weather alerts at the same time.

Scattered power outages were reported because of downed power lines, but there were no widespread power failures.
