Local Fire Chief Hailed As Hero For Pulling Teens From Creek

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A fire chief is being called a hero after helping two teenagers stranded in a local creek.

Police say a North Carolina man was driving along Pennsylvania Avenue in new Castle with his window down when he heard the teens call for help.

That's when he spotted two boys in the water.

One was already making his way to shore.

The chief used ropes to pull the 16-year-old to safety.

"I was just gonna walk across, grab the tree branch and hold on," said Austin Lample, who was rescued. "Didn't expect the current to be that strong, thought I was gonna get to get back across."

Medical crews checked him out at the scene. He is going to be OK.
