5 Teens Hurt When SUV Slams Into Wall In East Liberty
EAST LIBERTY (KDKA) - Pittsburgh Police are investigating a chase and crash that sent five teenagers to the hospital early Monday morning.
Six teens, ranging in age from 13 to 16, were in the car around 4:20 a.m. when the crash happened. The car hit a brick building at the intersection of Penn Avenue and East Liberty Boulevard.
The 30-second police chase started at the boarder of Squirrel Hill North and Point Breeze.
Pittsburgh Police said the car didn't have its lights on and that's why an officer tried to pull it over.
"I arrived on scene and I had four juveniles lying around the back of the car," Pittsburgh EMS District Chief Amera Gilchrist said. "The driver, you could only see the back of his head because the seat was pushed all the way up into the steering wheel."
Pittsburgh Police said one young man ran from the scene, while the rest were there when emergency responders arrived.
Police said that was the 16-year-old driver, a 13-year-old, two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old were conscious and alert, but were injured. The injuries could've been prevented if the three in the backseat would've been wearing seatbelts.
"Thank goodness none of them lost their lives, but it's just a testament to the great work that our men and women of our service do," Gilchrist said.
The driver was the most seriously hurt. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. The others were taken to Children's Hospital and to UPMC Mercy Hospital.
Police said the vehicle is believed to have been stolen from Shadyside.
