Multiple Vehicle Crash Closes Route 22, 3 Injured

SALEM TOWNSHIP (KDKA) –Three people were injured in a multiple vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer in Westmoreland County Tuesday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the accident happened on Route 22 around 6 a.m. in Delmont.

The tractor-trailer was headed west on Route 22 when it first slammed into a car at the intersection with Cloverleaf Drive.

Witnesses say a woman inside appeared to have head injuries. A flagger setting up a construction zone also fell to the ground and suffered a hip injury.

The tractor-trailer continued to go into the median and T-boned a white pickup truck, which trapped the driver inside.

"It was reported as it was on fire, but when the fire officials got here there was no fire. They did have entrapment by one of the vehicles that was T-boned by the tractor-trailer," Forbes Road Fire Department Chief Bob Rosatti said.

The driver of the pickup truck was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition.

The big rig hit at least six other cars in the Victory Car Sales lot before turning onto its side. The owner of the dealership said the exact amount of damage is unclear.

"That's the last of my concerns. The biggest concern is for the victims, the people that were involved in this. Just hoping that they're okay," Victor Olive said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer remained at the scene and talked with State Police. He appeared to be unharmed and was seen taking a field sobriety test at one point.

As of 9:15 a.m., the road was still closed. HAZMAT crews were called to clean up spilled oil and fuel from the vehicles involved. The road was expected to be reopened by 11 a.m.
