Woman Accused Of Escaping Police Custody Appears In Court

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – An inmate accused of escaping from police custody was in court Wednesday morning.

Police say Angela Lucci escaped from Washington Hospital, but was captured a few hours later.

The 24-year-old was in court on burglary, escape, theft and drug charges.

Her lawyer says she's drug-addicted and desperate for help.

"She's highly intelligent, a very likable person," said defense attorney Noah Geary. "Unfortunately, heroin addiction."

Police say Lucci was in treatment at Washington Hospital when she escaped, stole a car and drove to Ohio in the stolen car where she was arrested.

"She needs inpatient drug treatment," said Geary. "Unfortunately these kids today are not afraid of drugs. I was brought up to be afraid of drugs."

Lucci faces the possibility of several years in prison. Her lawyer hopes for treatment instead.

"Young gal, good job, no prior criminal record," said Geary. "She is very remorseful. I'm hoping to get her the treatment she needs, so that when she gets on the other side of these situations, she's moving forward and not engaging in any type of nonsense like this."

No trial date has been set yet.

Her attorney hopes to work out a deal prior.
