State Awards $50,000 Grant To Preserve August Wilson Home
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pennsylvania is providing a $50,000 grant to help restore the Pittsburgh home where late Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson lived as a child.
Wilson's nephew tells Friday's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the family is extremely grateful for support from the state Historical & Museum Commission.
The nonprofit Daisy Wilson Artist Community, named for Wilson's mother, owns the 168-year-old home on Bedford Avenue in Pittsburgh's Hill District.
The organization is rebuilding deteriorating exterior brick walls and last year performed emergency reconstruction of the front of the building.
Wilson lived in the home from his birth in 1945 until 1958.
He's is best known for his 10-play cycle that chronicles black life in America. He died in 2005.
In all, the state this week awarded 39 Keystone Historic Preservation grants totaling $1.1 million.
