Pirates' Cardinals Wins Have Pittsburghers Buzzing With Excitement
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Pirates' series at PNC Park with the St. Louis Cardinals could not have been more important.
The Cards have the best record in the league-- but the Pirates took some big steps to close the gap.
The final two games were especially memorable. First, there was Andrew McCutchen's miracle walk-off home run Saturday night. The very next night, Gregory Polanco did the honors. Two night games, a total of 24 innings.
Owner Jeff Trebac at Peppi's North Side Sandwich Shop says the late-night dramatics are leading to sleepy mornings.
Though he went to bed Sunday night when the Bucs fell behind in the 10th, he says, "I went back to the iPad again, in a couple more minutes, and I saw that we had a couple men on base. I ran straight downstairs, turned the TV back on, and watched the hit, hit, hit and just...pure dynamite."
Customer Steven Franklin says he had the same problem.
"I just started two new jobs, so I knew I had to come to work on Monday, so I had to cut it a little short when they were getting behind. But I was keeping up with the updates on my phone."
Trebac says the home of the "Roethlisberger" will soon have something new.
"We're fighting over final ingredients of the Jolly Roger," he says with a laugh.
He says there will be nine ingredients, to be exact. Stay tuned.
And you don't have to be a fan to appreciate what the games do for the city.
Positive comments are all over the VisitPittsburgh website.
"It's just lighting up, as people are showing photographs of Pittsburgh," says Communications Vice-President Tom Loftus
"This is from major league baseball on Fox," he points out. "Just a great scene of Pittsburgh. This posting right here that was tweeted a couple days ago is from the voice of the San Diego Padres. And he says PNC Park is he best setting in Major League baseball."
A customer at the PNC Park ticket window would agree.
"Seeing our great stadium, how could you not like the place?" he asks. "Why wouldn't you want to come to Pittsburgh?"
