Rev. Edward Malesic To Be Installed As Greensburg Bishop

GREENSBURG (KDKA) - A pastor from Harrisburg will be installed today as the new bishop of the Greensburg Catholic Diocese.

The Very Rev. Edward Malesic succeeds Bishop Lawrence Brandt, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 earlier this year.

Rev. Malesic will be ordained this afternoon at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg.

As bishop, Malesic will head a diocese serving almost 150,000 Catholics in 78 parishes across Armstrong, Fayette, Indiana and Westmoreland counties.

Malasic became a priest in the early '80s.

Today, he was surrounded by those he knew from his past, as well as those who have also taken on the same burden within the Catholic Church.

"The best," said Janet Jackson with the Diocese of Harrisburg. "He is a truly, truly wonderful priest and he will do a fantastic job as your bishop."

Bishop David Zubik was also in attendance and had high praise for the man described as a simple parish priest with honor and a sense of humor.

"Very pastoral man, you know, talks the language that people can understand," said Zubik. "He's got a great sense of humor. You know, he comes from a diocese that's not unlike this one, coming form the Diocese of Harrsiburg."

It was a long ceremony because it was an installation and ordination. First Malasic had to be ordained as a Bishop, then installed as Bishop of the diocese.
