Man Charged With Taking 3 Kids To Drug Deal
NORTH HUNTINGDON (KDKA) – A man is facing charges after allegedly bringing his three kids to a drug deal over the weekend in Westmoreland County.
The incident happened on Saturday at the intersection of Quaker Road and Five Pines Road in Hempfield Township.
"We've had some previous information that there was possibly some drug activity going on on Colonial Manor Road area," said Lt. Rod Mahinske, of the North Huntingdon Police Department.
Police saw a car pull up and they identified the driver as 29-year-old Shain Lee Oliver of Wilmerding.
"A guy walks up to the side of the car and sticks his hand in the window and it appears that we had a drug transaction take place," said Lt. Mahinske.
A few minutes later, police pulled Oliver over at the Sunoco on Route 30.
"When we get him stopped, we realized there's three young children – ages 2, 3 and 6 – in the car with him," Lt. Mahinske said. "He actually had more stuff on him, more drugs on him."
Police say those drugs allegedly included Fentanyl.
"This is what's causing our overdose deaths," said Lt. Mahinske.
Police also say the children were properly restrained in the vehicle.
This isn't the first time Oliver's been arrested for drugs. Between 2009 and 2011, he faced nine different drug-related charges. He pleaded guilty to three counts and was sentenced to 2½ to 5 years in prison, plus two years of probation.
Investigators say the children's mom showed up a short time later to take the children.
"I don't think she was a very happy camper at the time," Lt. Mahinske said.
Oliver is in the Westmoreland County Jail. He is facing a list of charges including, endangering the welfare of a child, recklessly endangering another person and various felony drug counts.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 29.
