Police Seek Suspect After Fatal Shooting In Wilkinsburg

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- Allegheny County Police say at least 10 shots were fired in front of the Cousins Corner Store in Wilkinsburg, Wednesday afternoon.

Kelvaughn Hawthorne, 32, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Hawthorne was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, but he later died.

"I could hear the shots that rang out from my house," said a relative of Hawthorne, who didn't want to appear on camera with KDKA. She received a phone call that he'd been shot at the store.

"We had run around the corner and there was an ambulance going past; he literally just jumped in the ambulance himself and I sort of just jumped in with him."

Police say several people were standing around the store at the time of the shooting, but they have few details on the suspect.

"Fleeing the scene was a white car, not sure of make and model, black male, beyond that we don't have much in the way of a description," said Allegheny County Police Lt. Andrew Schurman.

"We're praying he has a heart and soul and turns himself in," added the relative, "because he didn't have to do this."

Police will be reviewing the surveillance video from the corner store. They believe the shooter acted alone.

Hawthorne's relative says she doesn't know if he was an intended target or the victim of a random act of violence.

"I don't know what the circumstances was," she said, "but it didn't need to come this far. It should have never come to this."

Allegheny County Police say callers with information about the shooting can remain anonymous.

The phone number for Allegheny County Police headquarters is (412)-473-1300.
