Old Clairton Road Work Means Detours For Drivers

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Allegheny Department of Public Works says drivers should treat Old Clairton Road like a one-way street, during this road replacement project.

Access to local businesses and homes will be maintained during the construction.

For walkers like Ed Handschue and drivers who use Old Clairton Road in Pleasant Hills, the road replacement project may be an inconvenience.

"It's going to be interesting," said Handschue, who took a break from his morning walk, "Don't close the sidewalks."

"How is it going to affect once school starts in the fall?" asked Kim Ross, who lives nearby. "What's going to happen with the middle school being right here on Old Clairton and the elementary school and the high school, and how that's going to affect the children getting to school in the mornings?"

The road replacement project means the northbound lane of Old Clairton is closed from Glenburn Drive to Picture Drive. The detour will take drivers past Thomas Jefferson High School to Route 51. They should then turn left, and follow Route 51 North.

Speaking about the project, Louis Ceross of Jefferson Hills said, "It needs done, because there's a lot of holes and all kinds of, I don't think it's been done since we've been here."

At Lewis Auto Shop, just near the detour on Old Clairton, they expect business to decline because not as many cars and trucks will be passing by.

"Some will get here, some won't be able to get home. It's going to be a long learning curve," said Jeff, one of the technicians.

Drivers are urged to follow the appropriate signs along Old Clairton. Flaggers and police officers will help drivers navigate the detours and direct traffic, if necessary.
