Pitt's Suzie McConnell-Serio Talks Women In Sports
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Pitt women's basketball head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio joined Starkey And Mueller Thursday to talk about the future presence of women in men's sports.
Starkey held the interview in the wake of a woman, Jen Welter, being hired as a preseason linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals. Also, Becky Hammon is just coming off a summer in which she coached the San Antonio Spurs summer league team to a championship.
"It's amazing," McConnell-Serio said of Hammon.
The two basketball coaches are acquaintances.
"Just from a basketball side of it, Becky had an unbelievable career in the WNBA. She really ended up with the right organization where somebody was willing to give her a chance and give her a shot to become an assistant coach," said McConnell-Serio.
It was also recently announced that Sarah Thomas, a football official, has been hired to officiate NFL games for the 2015 season.
Starkey asked McConnell-Serio if she thinks this chain of events will spur a larger one in which teams in men's sports will be headed by women.
"I don't know if it will happen anytime soon, but you never know," she replied.
