2-Year-Old Who Received Liver Transplant Undergoing Procedure After Rejection

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The last few weeks haven't been easy for 2-year-old Lucas Goeller.

After a liver transplant last month, his body began rejecting the organ.

He lost the main artery that went to his liver.

Doctors at Children's Hospital have been treating Lucas to fight the infection. On Monday afternoon, he had another operation.

According to the Save Lucas Facebook page, little Lucas was intubated for doctors to place a drain the injured part of his liver, that would allow the infection to flow out.

The family requests prayers for a successful procedure.

Lucas's mom posted a picture of the toddler sitting in bed with a Cookie Monster balloon, hours before the operation.

Sunday, he spent time outside of his room at Children's Hospital, taking advantage of the good weather.

Lucas has been at Children's since his procedure, July 1. He was on the waiting list for a liver donation for nearly 18 months.

His family began a Save Lucas campaign, as part of their search for a donor.

In June, they received an offer for a liver from the family of a 4-year-old girl who died of a terminal brain illness. Her name was Olivia.

Like Lucas, Olivia's mother created a Facebook page for supporters to follow her story.

Someone following Olivia's story and Lucas's story connected the two.

Olivia's mom has now joined thousands of other people, who follow the story of Lucas Goeller and hope for a successful recovery.
