Police Surround Uptown Home, Take Man Wanted On Multiple Warrants Into Custody

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The SWAT team and Pittsburgh Police have one man in custody after a standoff Wednesday night in the city's Uptown section.

It started shortly before 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of the 1900-block of Fifth Avenue and Jumonville Street.

Authorities say they were searching for 45-year-old Derrick Ingram of Homestead. He was wanted on several felony warrants, including skipping out on his trial on 19 charges. He also faces charges from a chase back in March. Police chased him down Centre Avenue in the Hill District. Ingram crashed into a police car, another car head on and into several parked cars.

Last night, police say he appeared to have weapons with him and from witness statements, he was wearing body armor. Police say he ran inside a row house near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Jumonville Street.

Tactical officers fired tear gas into the home.

"Two of the individuals in the side of one home came out and they were on the roof," said Pittsburgh Police Spokeswoman Sonya Toler.

The men came out onto the roof several times. Eventually, one man surrendered to police and was taken for questioning.

Some nearby homes had to be evacuated while police tried to get Ingram out of the home.

The incident ended just before 11 p.m., when officers sent in a K-9 officer who cornered Ingram in a cubby hole. The K-9 bit Ingram, prompting him to surrender.

Paul Hayes manages the property that Ingram barricaded himself in.

"The front door was open. The police saw him, came to arrest him and he ran inside the house. That's what started this entire commotion," Hayes said.

When Ingram was arrested, he had a crack pipe on him. He didn't have weapons, but police say they couldn't take any chances.

"Based on his criminal history and his propensity for violence, we had to err on the side of caution assuming that there may have been weapons involved," Allegheny County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Kevin Kraus said.

He faces charges of burglary, criminal trespassing, flight to avoid prosecution, resisting arrest and recklessly endangering another person.

Ingram was also wanted on a federal warrant out of Los Angeles. He's accused of robbing a business there.
