PONY League World Series Brings Teams From All Over The World To Washington Co.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Teams from all over the country, and the world, have descended on Washington, Pennsylvania, for the Pony League World Series. The annual competition dates back 64 years.

Teams hail from countries ranging from Austria to Taiwan. But baseball is the common language.

First up on Friday was the home run derby.

The Pony League was founded in Washington County in 1951 for kids too old for Little League, and too young for high school ball. It's grown to a half million players, world-wide.

Long-time announcer Bob Gregg is the World Series director.

"It's part of who we are," he says. "It's part of the fabric of our community. People that have grown up here know this event, and it's important in that way."

Host team Washington gets an automatic spot. In 1955, they won it all.

"We have older people, younger people," says assistant coach Ed Palfreyman. "Kids that start out in younger leagues, they're up here. They're dreaming of playing up here."

Johnstown player Adam Cecere blasted his way into the final four, in the home run derby.

"It was good, especially first round, hitting six," he said. "Wish I could've hit better the second round."

Soon, they'll circle the bases for real, with a fitting finish to Pony League's 64th year.
