Former President Jimmy Carter Announces He Has Cancer

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Former President Jimmy Carter announced that he has cancer.

President Carter released a statement Wednesday saying:

Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so that I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.

The former President underwent surgery Monday in Atlanta to remove a "small mass" from his liver.

President Carter is the second-oldest living President, and is 90-years-old.

His brother Billy, and sisters Ruth and Gloria all died of pancreatic cancer, along with his parents James Earl Carter Sr. and Lillian Gordy Carter.

Carter was the nation's 39th president. After leaving the White House, he founded the center in Atlanta in 1982 to promote health care, democracy and other issues globally.
