Tyler Glasnow On His Development: 'Why Rush It?'

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – Indianapolis Indians pitcher and Pirates prospect Tyler Glasnow joined "The Fan Morning Show" Friday to discuss his progress as he works toward pitching in the majors, which is something that many fans are hoping to see happen sooner rather than later.

Some have been even calling for Glasnow to be called up this season, but he said he isn't losing any sleep over the possibility.

"Each year, I've gotten so much better," Glasnow said. "I've had the routine they give me, and then I've just gotten so much better each year. So, part of me is just like, they know what they're doing, they've done this a lot longer than I have, so why rush it? So, if they move me up, they move me up. If they don't, they don't. Hopefully, one day, I can be there and stay there...I trust the pace that they go to and I've never really had any kind of problem with it."

Glasnow opened up about what he feels he needs to work on to be major league ready.

"Definitely my changeup and getting my offspeed [pitches] over for strikes," Glasnow said. "And definitely focusing more on controlling the running game."

Glasnow said he has found Double-A hitting and Triple-A hitting to be mostly the same, although he has noticed subtle differences.

"You'll have kind of a mixture of the same ages and the same experience at both those levels," Glasnow said. "I think some of the guys in Triple-A are just a little older and more experienced, and don't swing as much, but for the most part, I haven't really noticed a huge difference yet."

Nevertheless, Glasnow did struggle to throw strikes after his call-up, presenting him with a challenge that he is thankful to have faced.

"When I got to Triple-A, I got outside of my comfort [zone] a little bit," Glasnow said. "Changed up some of the stuff that I've been doing in Double-A…can't really do exactly the same stuff…I'm definitely extremely happy that I got moved up to realize that before, say, next year - that things do change and they're not really in your control…I think I kind of got into a bad routine and got out of what I was doing. My mechanics got a little messed up and I started not feeling so good, and I was walking some guys."

Glasnow feels that he has turned the corner, though.

"As of late, I had the bullpen and that was the best I've felt, yesterday, in my last three or four starts," Glasnow said. "I think once I get back into the routine of stuff, I'll be back to myself."

Glasnow is thankful to play for an organization that handles its prospects the way that the Pirates do, from the executives, to the coaches, down to the players throughout the organization.

"I'm pretty fortunate enough to play for the Pirates, where everyone in the organization is extremely nice," Glasnow said. "There was no one on the team that was standoffish. Everyone was really embracing."

"You can just tell how much they care," Glasnow later added. "They have just tons of resources here that I think a lot of other organizations don't. I mean, they have everything you can think of, from mental conditioning, to a new, really nice weight room. It's nice knowing how much they care."

And how would Glasnow feel if that organization asked him to throw some innings in the majors this season?

"I've got no problem either way," Glasnow said with a laugh.
