Black & Gold Fans Pack North Shore For Pirates-Steelers Weekend

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Baseball and football, that's what this big weekend is all about here in Pittsburgh, and sports fans are packing the North Shore to take it all in.

Some Pirates and Steelers fans kicked off the big black and gold weekend early.

"It's Pittsburgh," said Bill McElwaine, a Pirates fan who was tailgating Friday night by the river. "This is what Pittsburgh's all about sitting here, the river, the city, the games, the people, it's awesome."

McElwaine went to the Pirates-Giants game Friday night and will be attending the Steelers preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

"We will be here all weekend; it's a party," he said.

Glenn Battistella came along for the ride.

"It's gonna be packed," said Battistella. "I know they almost have more sellouts this year than they had last season."

"I love coming back to Pittsburgh, it's really nice. It's been a long time since I've been here," said John Hradski, of North Carolina.

And these are the types of weekends John Vanwie lives for.

"We sell bottled water and peanuts, they can take them in the park, so make money doing that," the North Shore vendor says.

He will also be on the North Shore for the Steelers game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Friday and Saturday's Pirates games are both sold out, and the team is expecting Sunday's game will sellout as well.
