Penn Hills Holds Heated Meeting Over Elimination Of Crossing Guards

PENN HILLS (KDKA)- Parents and concerned neighbors packed the Penn Hills School Board meeting to discuss the elimination of some crossing guards.

The parents and concerned residents packed the meeting at Linton Middle School.

Recently, the school district decided to cut the number of crossing guards in the district from 71 down to 25.

Concerned neighbors say cutting these crossing guards makes it risky for kids.

"The very first child that gets hurt, you are going to be in such deep....whatever," said one concerned parent.

She pointed out the fact that a crossing guard was hit by a vehicle last year, and he's still recovering. She says that if that was a child that was hit, they probably would have died.

Others said cutting the crossing guard jobs has cost many people a paycheck they rely on.

"That's not right. You're cutting senior citizens' jobs that depend on those paychecks that live in Penn Hills," said one neighbor. "Safety of children, and yet you have people sitting here, collecting paycheck to paycheck that don't even live in Penn Hills."

Penn Hills Superintendent Dr. Nancy Hines says the reduction in crossing guards was actually proposed by the Penn Hills police chief back in May.
