Polish Hill Residents Upset Over Drivers Using Street As Detour

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Residents who live along Melwood Avenue in the city's Polish Hill section say enough is enough.

A driver crashed into four parked vehicles Wednesday night, and neighbors say they saw her speeding.

The neighbors say she most likely was using Melwood Avenue to avoid the major reconstruction project on the Bloomfield Bridge, where Baum Boulevard and Bigelow Boulevard meet.

Police identified the woman driver as 26-year-old Becky Shaughnessy.

Melwood Avenue resident Aubrey Halliburton said her truck was badly damaged, and pushed about 39 feet from where it was parked. She said another car was pushed onto the sidewalk.

Another resident of the street, Tammy Myers, told KDKA-TV News, "This is the worst the traffic has ever been on Melwood. Cars speed and go through stop signs all the time."

Neighbors say because of the reconstruction project, PennDOT needs to post more detour signs.

They also want to see police directing traffic because Melwood is a narrow street, not meant to be a main detour route.
