Belle Vernon Mom Facing Charges For Leaving Kids Home Alone

BELLE VERNON (KDKA) -- A Fayette County mother is facing charges for allegedly leaving her young children home alone for the second time in three months.

According to the criminal complaint, Kristi Novak is accused of leaving her 3-year-old and 4-year-old sons unattended in her Broad Avenue apartment in Belle Vernon on Tuesday afternoon.

The criminal complaint reports police found the boys in the hallway outside the apartment with the door wide open after a neighbor called to complain that they were running around unattended.

The officer checked inside the apartment, authorities said, but found no one inside.

"I have three children of my own, but I don't leave them home alone, I don't see why anyone would do that," said a neighbor.

Police contacted children and family services, then called Novak's cell phone, and took the boys back to the police station.

The criminal complaint says when Novak contacted police she told them she had left her children with a babysitter.

She told police, the criminal complaint says, that she was just down the road and must have just missed them at her apartment. But police say they were at the apartment minutes after she reported getting home, and she was not there.

Police say they are filing charges against her.

Also, children and family services are investigating.

The criminal complaint says the same officer responded to the apartment about three months prior on a similar call.

"The one incident before he actually rescued the kids from walking across the street," said a neighbor.
