Borough Officials Cry 'Fowl' Over Woman's Pet Ducks
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A grandmother who bought some pet ducks for her granddaughter is vowing to keep them despite the fact that the place she lives says ducks aren't allowed.
Jodi Gavin-Fedor lives in Manor, Westmoreland County.
She's named the two ducks "Lucy" and "Ricky."
The birds call a fenced-in section of the backyard home. They have a pen for nighttime, and a pool to lounge during the day.
But then Fedor says the zoning officer came to the front door.
"He said out right that I have to get rid of my ducks and I said, 'I don't think so!'" said Gavin-Fedor.
The borough does have an ordinance that says no "fowl" allowed. So Gavin-Fedor asked for an exemption, and was denied.
Yet she claims there's a neighbor with bees and another who has 15 chickens and five ducks.
"I feel for the lady," said Borough Councilman Bruce Hartman Jr. "She bought the duck for her granddaughter. However, we have an ordinance. Had she checked prior to that, she may not have bought the duck because the ordinance specifically says no fowl."
Gavin-Fedor says she was told she could be fined more than $300 a day if she doesn't get rid of the ducks, but she says she won't because her granddaughter loves them so much.
"She pets them, and she sits in there with them. And they're not getting rid of them. Nobody is taking them."
