Thousands Take Part In 38th Great Race
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Thousands ran through the city as part of the Great Race Sunday.
Over the last 40 years, the annual Richard S. Caliguiri Race has become the people's race. Every year, thousands of runners and walkers show up for the 10K race and the 5K race/walk. And they don't do it for money or accolades.
"This race, we bill it as a community race, a family race," said race director Brian Cates. "It's non-competitive. In fact, we don't have any prize money."
"I enjoy the community aspect of it," said Brent Lopic who ran in the Great Race. "You know, it's a nice morning – Sunday in September, usually cool weather."
Amy Fowler's daughter Alexis has been training. She's the third generation to run in the race.
"Last weekend we went to North Park and I've been running in my neighborhood," said Alexis Fowler.
Megan Baker won a family bet with her father. As a result, he showed up at the race.
"That's why I'm wearing this," said her father, Chris Baker. "That's why I'm wearing this. If she did the race, so I'm wearing this."
The Great Race is encouraging to runners to improve and maintain good health.
"In January, I had Chiari malformation surgery. It put me down a couple of months," said Pastor Russel Shuluga with Sewickley United Methodist Church. "I've been back at it in recent months, trying to get back in shape."
Getting in shape for yet another successful season, brought the entire Chartiers Valley High School basketball team to the race.
The Great Race ended at Point State Park. And 17,000 runners who registered will each donate $1 to the Caliguiri Foundation to help fight against Amyloidosis.
