Last-Ditch Talks Slated To Head Off Peters Teachers' Strike

CANONSBURG (AP) - Last-ditch negotiations have been scheduled to avert a teachers' strike in one of western Pennsylvania's most affluent school districts.

Officials with the Peters Township School District say they'll meet again with the teachers' union on Tuesday night in hopes of avoiding a strike the teachers are planning to begin Wednesday.

The district says the sides met Sunday through a mediator because of the "tone" of recent negotiations. Sunday's talks were the 16th negotiating session so far.

The teachers' contract expired Aug. 31 and they held a vote Sept. 16 at which they authorized an Oct. 28 strike if a contract is not reached.

The district says it countered the teachers' last offer and also agreed to a fact-finding hearing, but says the union refused.

Salaries range from $45,900 for first-year teachers up to $104,000.
