Couple Killed In Port Authority Bus Accident Identified
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has now released the identities of the man and woman who were killed when they were run over by a Port Authority bus.
The accident happened Monday afternoon on the border of the city's Oakland and Hill District neighborhoods just after the couple got off the bus.
The victims have been identified through their fingerprints as 73-year-old Henry Walker and his wife, 68-year-old Carol Williamson, of Wilkinsburg.
It was a scene that brought many to tears. Two people struck by an SUV and pushed into the path of the bus right after crossing the intersection of University Drive at Centre Avenue and Allequippa Street.
"I was on the front of the bus, and the gentleman got off in a wheelchair, and he had the light, so he proceeded to cross. The black car went to turn the bend around the bus to come up the hill, and didn't see him crossing," said Reggie Moorefield, a witness. "Before anybody could get her attention that he was crossing, she hit him."
The black SUV sat near the inbound 83 Bedford Hill bus around 2:15 p.m. Monday afternoon.
According to investigators, the SUV did not hit Williamson as she attempted to help her husband. But somehow they both went under the bus as the driver accelerated to leave.
"When [the bus driver] went to slam on his brakes, the brakes didn't slam on, and he hit the lady that was with the gentleman in the wheelchair and ran over the guy that was in the wheelchair," said Moorefield.
The Port Authority has turned the accident investigation over to Pittsburgh Police.
