Hundreds Of Local Families Counting On KD Turkey Fund This Holiday Season

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) -- Baskets of food are lined up, single file, at the Walnut Grove Food Bank in West Mifflin. Also waiting in line are individuals and families in need. The food bank provides necessities twice a month.

Administrator Lori Kallop has worked there for 22 years. She's seen thousands of people who count on the KDKA-TV Turkey Fund.

"Food prices are so high, and trying to buy a turkey, that's expensive to a big family," she says. "That's a burden to a lot of people."

There are some for whom the need is only temporary; and yet, that need is just as strong. So is their appreciation for those who donate to the Turkey Fund.

Katie Justice's husband works full time. But she says taking care of a special needs daughter is also a full-time job.

"She receives in-home support for her walking, and for her vision. So I'm a mom who doesn't want to be without her. I want to see that she's improving in her therapy, so I'm home with her full time."

The Turkey Fund helps balance the scales, if only for a day.

"They really appreciate the Turkey Fund every year," the administrator reiterates. "Because they know that they'll be able to have a nice Thanksgiving dinner for their family."
