Panel: Highmark Wrongly Lowered Cancer Payments To UPMC

PITTSBURGH (AP) - An arbitration panel says Highmark violated a $188 million contract with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and must now pay millions of dollars for past claims.

The panel on Friday found that Highmark wrongly lowered cancer care payments to the hospital system for patients with Highmark's commercial plans between April 2014 and October 2015.

The state negotiated an agreement in 2012 that put the panel in charge of settling outstanding disagreements between the nonprofits.

Insurance brokers say the ruling will result in higher rates for people with group health insurance through Highmark.

UPMC says it cannot comment on the arbitration.

Highmark says employers and self-insured customers who buy insurance in the commercial market may have to pay the difference between Highmark's payment and what UPMC charged.
