Sewickley Academy Students Hoping Odds Aren't Stacked Against Them In World Record Attempt

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- What's going on at Sewickley Academy?

"They're trying to get their stack of cups to go right side up, right side down, right side up," says physical education teacher Lori Yost, referring to grade school students working in one of six "stations" in the gymnasium.

"Today is the Guinness Book of World Records day for stacking the most cups in the most locations on the same day," she explains. "Right now, there are 307 schools in 33 countries that are participating."

She says participants all over the world are up-stacking and down-stacking as fast as they can, in 30-minute time spans.

They hope to break last year's stack up record of 592,000 human cup stackers.

"We're stacking tiny little cups, medium size cups, and big giant cups. We're trying to get a little bit of fitness in with it. And some eye-hand coordination, some motor skills, all in the same day," said Yost. "It keeps your right brain going, your left brain going. They call it a 'track meet for the mind.'"
