Jogger Attacked & Robbed Along South Side Riverfront Trail
SOUTH SIDE (KDKA)- A jogger is recovering after being attacked along a local riverfront trail.
Pittsburgh Police say the attack took place around 8:00 p.m. on Monday along the South Side Riverfront Trail.
The 30-year-old man from Coraopolis was jogging along the trail when two men stepped out from the bushes.
He told police one of them asked for a cigarette. When the victim said he didn't have cigarettes, the man asked for $1.
At that point, police say the victim pulled out his wallet and that's when one of the suspects pulled out a gun, pistol-whipped him and stole his wallet.
According to a public safety spokesperson, the victim was only able to give them details on the race and heights of the suspects.
It's unclear what other information police are working with.
The suspects are described as two black men. One of them was around 6-feet-3-inches tall and the other was around 5-feet-10-inches tall.
After hearing the news, some people opted to not walk alone in the area Tuesday morning.
"It can be kind of scary. There's no lights down here too which, at night, can be a problem for joggers and bikers, too," Brandon Lehman said.
"I think you have to temper it with the fact that after dark, that's when the opportunity presents itself and you just have to be careful," Teo Hollander said.
Lehman said as a daily rider on the trail, he just takes extra precaution on when he uses it.
"I have to leave work early sometimes too to make sure that I'm not riding my bike after 5:30 when it gets really dark," he said.
The victim in the case refused to be transported to the hospital.
Police are investigating.
